Melike Bell moved to the United States from Istanbul, Turkey with her sister, Mehtap Safi, to open a home good store. Bell, a former Bank Manager, dreamed of importing luxurious home goods from Istanbul to San Diego. She said, "I loved my occupation. I learned a lot but 18 years was enough for me. I wanted to start something new in a new country." Bell enrolled in San Diego College of Continuing Education's Small Business Certificate Programs and opened her first storefront, Bell and Moon, two months later at Parkway Plaza.

Business Information Worker: Entry Level Skills

Learn keyboarding to enhance typing skills, word processing to compose letters and prepare reports, and email management to send and manage emails and schedule meetings. Prepares students for a wide variety of entry level jobs in office settings, retail shops and/or as customer service representatives, receptionists and office clerks.

Business Information Worker: Communication Skills

Learn soft skills including written business communication, verbal business communication and problem-solving, critical thinking and customer service in a variety of workplace environments. Prepares students for entry level jobs in office settings, retail shops and/or as customer service representatives, receptionists and information clerks.

Business Information Worker: Technical Skills

Learn basic computers and operating systems used in business environment plus how to build, analyze and formulate spreadsheets including deeper understanding of computer networks, information systems, security and the internet in a business environment. Prepares students for entry level jobs in office settings, retail shops and/or as customer service representatives, receptionists and information clerks.

Complete three courses:

Account Clerk

Provides students with the basic skills necessary to achieve successful employment in the accounting field.

Administrative Assistant

Learn to create and distribute complex documents; develop analytical and statistical reports; create presentations; and use the Internet as a resource.

Project Management

Provides students with the knowledge and skills needed in project planning and management. This program provides students with the practical application skills and working knowledge of the tools necessary to plan, implement and manage projects in any business environment.

The program courses include instruction in the fundamentals of project management, including planning, defining a project, resources, roles and responsibilities, necessary skills, tools and processes. Project management software options such as Microsoft Project are used throughout the program. Instruction will also cover team building, problem solving, decision making, using creativity and innovation, emerging trends, communication skills and a capstone project.

Students who successfully complete the program can use the skills learned as a foundation for additional educational training in any business area.

Small Business Planning

Provides students with the practical application skills and knowledge to start and manage a small business. Includes instruction in the essentials of starting a small business, recognizing the requirements of local, state and federal organizations, identifying best practices in hiring, as well as sales and marketing strategies.

In a capstone written business plan project, students demonstrate a business model concept that creates customer value in a product or service, and identifies how a student may successfully create self-employment by creating their own small business.

Students who successfully complete the program can use the skills learned to start their own small business for self-employment or obtain a job in the field of business management, market analysis, business development or sales.

Small Business Growth

Provides students with the practical application skills and knowledge to plan, manage and grow a small business. The Business Sales program provides students with the practical knowledge and skills for success in small business sales and sales occupations. The program guides students through the preparation, use, and applications of customer relationship management (CRM) systems. The program also includes instruction in sales communication skills, organizational skills, confidence building, and professional resiliency. Topics include establishing a CRM, using the CRM effectively, CRM team management, and data management and analysis, essential listening, communication professionalism, problem solving, the use of CRM in communications, bidding, reputation management, communication flow, workplace social skills, and customer interaction. Students who successfully complete the program can use the knowledge, skills, and tools learned to obtain a job in a sales profession, manage the sales for a small business, or effectively sell their own products or services as an entrepreneur.
